Mel's Thoughts on the Gospel of Matthew

So, we have to read the Gospel of Matthew, Acts of the Apostles chapters 1-9, and I Corinthians for Medieval History, and, good Jew that I am, I'm confused. Da explained some of it to me1, but I still feel the need to natter on. If my utterly impolite commentary will insult you, shove off. :)

Ok, so Da explained to me why the majority of the first chapter of Matthew is explaining how Joseph was descended from David, and from Abraham before that, and I understand that it was because the Jewish Messiah was supposed to be descended from David and it was to sell the idea to the Jews, but then why is it Joseph? Jews trace the family line through the matriarchy. Blarg.
What's up with the seriously anti-women bent of this? But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, makes her an adulteress, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery (5:32)? Wow, harsh much.
Can someone explain this to me? The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is not sound, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! (6:22-3) Does that mean you can only be a good Christian if you have 20-20 vision? *snickers*
A sound tree cannot bear evil fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. (7:18) What about rotten fruit?
Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. (10:34) Yeah, so much for a man who talks peace, huh?
I've just gotten to chapter 14. I thought Herod was dead way back before Jesus came to Galilee.
Um, why does Jesus travel with these guys if they don't understand a word he says? And why does he keep telling people not to tell anyone who he is? That's no way to spread a new religion.
I love how Jesus hates tax collectors. Political, much?
And Mary Magdalene doesn't appear until the very end. Awesome.
For serious, guys, Matthew need a good editor. Inconsistencies ahoy!

Shower time now, I think, and then back to read Acts and Corinthians.
1 Da went to Fordham for grad school, so he's my source for all things Christian.
