why I never joined the debate team

Saw the stupidest eHarmony ad on tv today. Basically, it said that going to bars to pick people up was "passive", but that using eHarmony was the active way to find twu wuv. I would have thought it was the exact opposite; when you use eHarmony, aren't you just sitting back and letting them do the work?

And why am I putting that much thought into this?

Speaking of lots of thought, here's an interesting meme:

Would you do meth if it was legalized?
Hell to the no. What a great way to fuck yourself up.

Are you for or against abortion?
I'm rabidly pro-choice. However, I don't think that it should be considered a contraceptive method. The word "contraceptive" means something used to prevent conception. If you're already pregnant, you kind of fucked that one up, didn't ya?

Abortion has serious medical ramifications for a period of time afterward, and the potential for extended psychological ramifications. It's not something that should be done lightly. It would be so much better if there was real sex education, easier access to condoms, and the complete legalization of Plan B.

Would our country (United States) fall with a woman president?
The right woman (or man) is all that this country needs. Gender is a barely a factor.

Do you believe in the death penalty?
And this is where I stop carrying the liberal party line. I'm in favor of the death penalty for serial killers, serial rapists, people who commit hate crimes or kill cops. Not everyone is fixable, not every criminal can be reformed, and someone who is going to cause that much death and destruction doesn't deserve to live.

Then again, I think pedophiles and rapists should be forcibly sterilized, so I'm kind of blood-thirsty.

Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?
Wish? No. I think it should be legalized, but I do not and would not use it. I think it should be legalized so it can be regulated: make sure that there aren't other drugs or chemicals in them, enable marijuana's use for medical purposes. Marijuana is less addictive and less dangerous than tobacco products. I think it's tobacco that should be illegal (not that it'll ever happen).

Do you believe in God?
Ugh, I don't know. My relationship with religion is complicated, which doesn't actually answer this question. Am I a religious person? Yes, actually, I think so; the cultural trappings of Judaism are very important to me, even though I don't go to synagogue and have no real interest in changing that. Am I spiritual? Not really.

Do I believe in God? I've never had a relationship with God, and I haven't felt that my life is missing something because of it. And, especially recently, I have more...immediate concerns than the possible presence of a deity or deities. And as I've said before, God is going to go on whether or not I believe, so I'm in no rush to sort that one out.

Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized?
Definitely. However, I think there's a fundamental problem with that question. Marriage is a religious institution. What we should be campaigning for is civil unions. The joy of religious freedom means that the government can't tell a church, synagogue, etc. that they have to recognize marriages; find a community that is going to support you. Government recognition is what will allow for tax benefits, parental rights to children, access to hospital rooms, etc.

I also think that health care is a hell of a lot more important to the gay community than gay marriage. People get mad when I say that.

Do you think its wrong that so many Hispanics are moving to the USA?
America is a country of immigrants. Our strength is the combination of component cultures, the ultimate example of the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. The idea that America is "full" is bullshit.

A twelve year old girl has a baby...should she keep it?
First of all, if she'd had proper sex education she probably wouldn't have gotten pregnant in the first place. So there.

A twelve year old is not mature enough to raise a child. End of story. If possible, she should get an abortion. If she decides to carry it to term, she should put it up for adoption. If her parents want to raise the kid? Fine, I guess. But should she be raising the kid herself? No way in hell.

Should the alcohol age be lowered to 18?
Not until alcohol stops being taboo. The way to solve the teenage drinking problem is proper parental behavior, not making it legal. My parents never made a big deal about alcohol, and I never had the urge to get as drunk as possible as soon as I was out of the house. Probably one of the few parenting decisions they made that I would emulate (if I have kids, which is a) not likely and b) a whole 'nother story).

Assisted suicide is illegal...do you agree?
The very idea that suicide is illegal is so bizarre. Healthy people who attempt suicide are unwell, either because they actually want to die, or they're looking for attention. That, however, is a combination of the disaster of the health care system and our culture's fear of mental illness.

However, I think that if someone is terminally ill and in pain, it's a humanitarian act to end their suffering.

Do you believe in spanking your children?
No. Corporal punishment is not the only way to teach children, and it's easy to go overboard.

Would you burn an American flag for a million dollars?
For money? Hell no. To express my political views? Probably not. I'm actually very patriotic, but I think the idea of America is being corrupted by politicians on both sides. Political protest is one of the ultimate signs of patriotism; it's people trying to make their country better.

A mother is declared innocent after murdering her 5 children in a temporary insanity case, do you agree?
I call bullshit. All actions have consequences. Whether those consequences are commitment to a mental institution, jail time, or death, she needs to pay for what she's done just like anyone else.

Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers?
Afraid? No.

This meme's questions are really badly phrased, but I think they're still thought-provoking.

I can only say ditto, to nearly everything here.

Don't get me started on the whole "gay marriage" thing. I could go for paragraphs.

Do you notice how so many of these issues are (incorrectly) framed as dichotomies?

My favorite is this one:
Assisted suicide is illegal...do you agree?

Yes, I do agree that it is illegal. Because. You know. It is. I'm sure what they meant to ask is whether it should be. But, yes, poor phrasing.
