Year in Review Meme, 1 of 3

Also, a life lesson:

(Prednisone + Pepcid) + fried shrimp = acid reflux of doom
acid reflux of doom + crystallized ginger = ability to go to sleep without vomiting up insides.

I didn't need to know this first hand.

Happy New Year, everybody. I'm certainly not sad to see 2009 go.

I'll be meme-ing quite a bit. Sorry for spamming.

1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?
gotten fired for real, moved out of an apartment, worked retail, used a cookie press

2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Well, the only resolution I made last year was to not wind up in the hospital, which I managed to fuck up with something like 36 hours to spare. I will be making some resolutions (more like guidelines) for this year.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

4. Did anyone close to you die?
My grandmother, on 14 December

5. What countries did you visit?
Sometimes, I think my community college is another country...

6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
sanity, enrollment in a four-year college, my own residence, a love life

7. What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I'm not one for dates.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Finished the semester at MC with a 4.0. This is tarnished, however, by the exam that's still outstanding, but I hope to have that sorted out soon.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Losing the job at Starbucks. It was my own damned fault.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Clinical depression, frightening allergic reaction to one of my meds.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
my Dragon*Con pass

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
kashmir_ki_kali, muck_a_luck, allandaros, N

13. Whose behavior made you appalled?

14. Where did most of your money go?
Fall 2009 semester, apartment bills, Dragon*Con

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Dragon*Con is basically what got me through a really horrific winter, spring, and early summer

16. What song(s) will always remind you of 2009?
"Closer to Fine" - Indigo Girls

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. Happier or sadder? Happier, but only because last winter was horrendous. This year has probably been the worst in the up-and-down swings, and while things had been a little better more recently, the last three weeks (Bubbe passing away and the following funeral, the clusterfuck with the meds allergy) have put a dent in that
ii. Richer or poorer? Poorer, since just about every cent I have to my name is allocated at the moment.
iii. Thinner or fatter closer to a healthy weight? Still teetering at 5-7 pounds less than I should weigh, which can get even worse if I have a few bad days in a row.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
socializing, working, exercising

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
having panic attacks

20. How did you spend Christmas?
Hiding in my room from my family, then Chinese food for dinner

21. Did you fall in love in 2009?

22. How many one-night stands?
None. I've stopped counting how long it's been since I had sex, it's too depressing.

23. What was your favorite TV program?
Castle, Doctor Who. I watched other shows (new and reruns), but Castle is my feel-good show right now. Because of the banter, not that faulty crime procedural. :D

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't usually bother to expend the energy required to hate people, but I certainly ended a friendship this year that I doubt is reparable.

25. What was the best book you read?
The Elegance of the Hedgehog, Muriel Barbery. It was a little caught up in its own artifice at times, but I really enjoyed it.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Alix Olson. I also rediscovered my love of the Asian table harp family (Japanese koto, Chinese zheng)

27. What did you want and get?
Good grades, finally, and I earned those motherfuckers.

28. What was your favorite film of this year?
Star Trek, the reboot

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Slept late, did some housework (my choice, was not in the mood to celebrate), and then the family took me out to a lovely little family-owned Italian restaurant. I turned 22.

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Not being crazy. Is it really so much to ask?

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
geek goddess

32. What kept you sane?
Sheer cussedness and a fistful of meds.

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Zoe Saldana

34. What political issue stirred you the most?
Ugh, every time I think about political issues I feel strongly about (healthcare reform, gay marriage, America's military involvement overseas), I get so angry I can't think straight and then I burst into tears (thanks, clinical depression). Maybe in a few years I'll be able to be politically active again without it screwing up everything else.

35. Who did you miss?
My sanity, my high school friends. The latter, at least, I can make more of an effort to keep in touch with.

37. Who was the best new person you met?
Remeeting Belle and Mikah, and all the awesome new people I met at allandaros's party.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009:
Learn your limits.

39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
And the less I seek my source--for some definitive--the closer I am to fine. - "Closer to Fine", Indigo Girls

And, for kicks, last year's answers.

I'm fairly certain crystallized ginger fixes everything. I take it religiously.
