big update is big

Ye gods, I hadn't realized that it had been so long since I posted. Wow. I have been busy, at least. Here's the basics:

Done done done with classes at the community college. I'm not done with school, of course, but at least I'm done with that shithole.

I got into Point Park, and the Conservatory offered me $14k in grants as long as I keep my grades up. Which, since that's my plan anyway, is freaking awesome. And that's not including work study and anything else I get in the way of financial aid from the university itself. So, I'm going to be in Pittsburgh in the fall. Now to work out the details: orientation, sorting out an error with my FAFSA, apartment hunting, etc.

I'm still working at the theatre on campus, but I'm off hunting for a second job, so I can earn some more money. I'm spreading the net really wide, of course, which means lots of retail and waitressing. Hopefully I'll get something, but I'm really hoping for the pirate tavern (no joke) or Victoria's Secret (employee discount!), or something I can wear t-shirts and jeans to. I want so much, I know.

I should be writing, but instead I've been helping the Geekling fill out job apps for himself. If I thought one set was killing my soul, just imagine how two sets is making me feel. *stabs eyes*

Can you ask them for suggestions of what is cool and interesting in Pittsburgh? New city, and I know very little about it!

I will. They're academics--well, it's a wife-and-husband couple, and the wife's an academic--and so they've been moving around the country for grad school and jobs, but they both say it's a really wonderful small city and miss it enormously. They were both at Carnegie Mellon and loved being a student in the city. M.

I'm in Pittsburgh! :)

I know we're hardly close or anything, since you're a friend-of-a-friend, but I can offer a few ideas: The riverwalk is a great outdoor rec area right downtown, for biking, running/walking, or rollerblading. It runs several miles in a loop around the rivers, and is supposedly pretty scenic. I haven't been down there but will be on Sunday for March of Dimes! :D

There's also Pegasus, the big local gay bar, and a bunch of art theater places, and huge summer happenings like Shakespeare in the Park, etc. There's cultural bits - The Benedum Center and Heinz Hall downtown are where they do a lot of performances, musical and otherwise, and if you're more into the down-home grassroots music scene, smaller shows are played in a variety of tiny venues like Mr. Small's (and a bunch of punk-ish houses with basement stages).

There's also the Children's Museum, the Carnegie Science Center, the National Aviary and the Pittsburgh Zoo! And the Carnegie Library system, which is gorgeous and fantastically appointed. Oh, and the sports. But you'll hear enough about those. Pittsburgh is a city of sports fans. Wear black and yellow on football Sundays. Trust me.

Hope you'll love it here like I do! :)

(PS - I live on the North Side... not too far from the college! Mayhaps we can grab coffee some time?)

Thanks so much!

Coffee sounds great. It's always nice to hang out with people in RL, too.

(Silly me, but who's the mutual friend? I'm sieve-brain today.)
